Dr. Luanne Eris Fose Revised July 30, 2004
1. With Appearance selected in the Category list on the left of this dialog box, click on
the pull-down arrow next to where it says Page font: and select the font list of
Verdana, Arial Helvetica, sans-serif. This will now be the font list that all of your
text will default to unless you change it manually. Notice that in designing web pages
you don’t select
font but rather you provide Dreamweaver with a “font list.”
The font list has your first-choice font listed first; if the viewer of your web page
doesn’t have that font, it will load the next font choice that you have provided in your
font list. If you wish to make your own font list, click on the pull-down menu next to
Page font: and select Edit Font List…

2. When the Edit Font List dialog box appears (Figure 12), find Tahoma in the Available
Fonts: box and click on the left arrow to add it to the Chosen Fonts: box. Continue to
do this adding Verdana, Arial, and sans serif. You will see them added in the Font
List: box at the top of this dialog box. Click OK to confirm this font list. Now back in
the Page Properties dialog box, if you select the pull-down menu next to Page font:
you will see your new font list of Tahoma, Verdana, Arial, and sans-serif added to the
list. For the purpose of this tutorial, keep your font choice as Verdana, Arial, Helvetica.
3. By using CSS, we can select our font size to be displayed in a variety of ways (i.e., pixels,
points, inches, centimeters, millimeters, picas, etc.). Next to the Size: text box, select
12 from the pull-down arrows and select pixels from the pull-down menu next to it.
(Note: You can also type in the number of the size if you prefer.)
4. Next to Text color: click on the little color palette box and select a black of #000000
to be the default for your pages or simply type the hexadecimal code of #000000 in the
text box.
5. Type the hexadecimal number #A1B39C in the text box next to Background color.
This color has been selected as the default background color for the Cal Poly template.
If you wanted to change this color, you could click on the color palette next to the word
Background color: and select a color from the web-safe color palette. (We will discuss
hexadecimal numbers and what they mean in terms of web-safe colors later.)
